ACM NAMES BLUESPEC FOUNDER ARVIND 2006 ACM FELLOW

Contributions to Dataflow Computing, Verification Cited

Waltham, Mass. – February 22, 2007– The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has named Arvind, founder of Bluespec(TM) Inc., developer of the only electronic system level (ESL) synthesis for control logic and complex datapaths in chip design, a 2006 ACM Fellow.

Arvind, who is the Johnson professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), received this award for his contributions to dataflow computing and verification. The ACM Fellows Program celebrates exceptional contributions of leading members in the computing field who have helped to enlighten researchers, developers, practitioners and end-users of information technology throughout the world.

Arvind was named an IEEE Fellow in 1994 and received the Charles Babbage Outstanding Scientist Award. In 1999, he was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, where he received his B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering. Also in 1999, the University of Minnesota, where he was awarded a master's of science degree and Ph.D. in Computer Science, awarded him with its Distinguished Alumni Award.

He contributed to the development of dynamic dataflow architectures, the implicitly parallel programming languages Id and pH, and compilation of these languages on parallel machines. In 1992, his group at MIT built a dozen Monsoon dataflow machines and associated software in collaboration with Motorola. Arvind has served on editorial boards, chaired professional conferences and consulted for many top tier technology and computer companies. He was founder and president of Sandburst, a fabless semiconductor company acquired by Broadcom in 2006.

ACM will formally recognize its new Fellows at its annual Awards Banquet in June in San Diego, Calif. Additional information about the ACM 2006 Fellows, the awards event, as well as previous ACM Fellows and award winners is available at www.acm.org/awards.

About Bluespec
Bluespec Inc. manufactures industry standards-based Electronic Design Automation (EDA) toolsets that significantly raise the level of abstraction for hardware design while retaining the ability to automatically synthesize high-quality RTL, without compromising speed, power or area. The toolsets, including the only ESL synthesis tools focused on control and complex datapaths, allow ASIC and FPGA designers to reduce design time, bugs and re-spins that contribute to product delays and escalating costs.
